District level elections to be completed in Volta region by December 31

The District Assembly and Unit Committee elections in the Volta Region are expected to be completed by Friday December 31.

“Generally the elections are taking place throughout the region,” Ms Laurantia Kpatakpa, Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, said in an interview with the GNA.

The late arrival of election materials in the region caused the Commission to shift the elections from Tuesday December 28, to Wednesday December 29 yet the elections could not take place in some electoral areas due to some technical hitches.

Ms Kpatakpa explained that the “time, volume and details” in printing the ballot papers posed challenges to the printers who could therefore not deliver the job to the Commission on time for the necessary corrections before the final printing to be done.

She said the Commission would issue a statement after it has assessed the magnitude of the challenges in the region but assured that the challenges were manageable.

Elections to the Ho Municipal Assembly could not take place in the Ho Central, Duga, Akoefe-Kpenoe, Hodzo and Agorve Electoral Areas on Wednesday December 29 because the pictures of the candidates had been swapped.

Mr Danso Abeam, the Ho Municipal Electoral Officer told the GNA that Unit Committee elections could also not be held at Akorme, Bake-Gblefe, Akoefe, Kpenoe, and Abutia-Teti on Wednesday December 29 due to faulty ballots.

Mr Abeam said the elections in those areas were not likely to go beyond December 31 because of legal implications.
