Preachers asked to stop shameful alms begging in the name of God

A pastor of the Christ Apostolic Church, Toronto branch, Canada, has encouraged evangelists to preach the gospel without shame or fear but with some sense of dignity.

The Reverend Clive denounced the situation where many people just for reasons of economic survival, pretend to be Ministers of God and engage in naked extortion and bare-faced alms-begging on the streets of the cities.

This, he said, was creating image problems for the Church in the country and should be a source of worry to all genuine Christians.

The Rev. Clive was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on Christmas day after holding counselling sessions with some itinerant preachers at the Adum business district and the central market in Kumasi.

These preachers are seen by many in the metropolis as complete nuisance, owing their unrestrained appeals to the public to dole out money to support them in the Christ ministry.

The Rev Clive said it was wrong for people in the Gospel Ministry to preach for money as the Bible says, “It was given to you freely and you must give it out freely.”

He said: “If people touched by the word of God on their own volition give gifts to the Preachers that would be fine and good.”
