40 people killed at WFP office in Pakistan

A blast at a food distribution point in Pakistan killed at least 40 people and injured 70 others on Saturday, a senior government official said.

Sohail Khan of the Bajaur Agency told CNN a suicide bomber blew himself up near a World Food Programme distribution center.

Jackie Dent, a spokeswoman for the United Nations World Food Programme, confirmed that the incident happened outside a World Food Programme distribution point in Khar. Dent said food was being distributed at the time of the blast.

Amjad Jamal, a spokesman for the World Food Programme, said more than 300 people were going through a security screening to get food and other items. Jamal said those who had been internally displaced during military efforts in Bajaur Agency get a month’s supply of food and other goods.

Khar is the headquarters of Bajaur Agency, one of the seven districts of Pakistan’s tribal region bordering Afghanistan

Jamal said all staff members of the World Food Programme and its partner organizations are safe.
