Food vendors schooled on hygiene

A two-day workshop on environmental sanitation, food and personal hygiene has been organised for food vendors in the Techiman Municipality.

The workshop, organised by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with Ghana Traditional Caterers Association was aimed at equipping the food vendors with the necessary skills and knowledge on food safety.

Mr. Casley Hayford Ababio, Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the Caterers Association, said poor food handling was a major challenge facing the consuming public.

He said unhygienic food offered to the public could compromise the health of individuals and could lead to sickness and a setback in economic productivity.

Mr Ababio said it was these reasons that the Association and the Ministry has embarked on education to sensitize food vendors throughout the country on food hygiene and sanitation.

Mr. Richard Kyeremeh Yeboah, regulatory officer of the Food and Drugs Board, said the use of unwholesome products for the preparation of food by some traditional caterers posed a threat to the health of the people and called on such persons to shun the practice.
