Man jailed 10 years for possessing 175gm of cannabis

A 20-year-old convict, serving a seven-year jail term, has been sentenced to additional 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for possessing 175 grammes of cannabis.

Richmond Kwabena Kese, an inmate of the Kumasi Central Prisons, denied the offence.

Police Chief Inspector Isaac Mensah-Appenteng told the court that on March 6 Kese and two other convicts were sent out to work.

On their return, the officers found dried leaves suspected to be cannabis concealed in a black polythene bag buried in a fertilizer sack full of charcoal he was carrying.

Police Chief Inspector Mensah-Appenteng said Kese admitted ownership of the drug and led the officers to a spot near the Prisons’ Commander’s bungalow where another quantity of the dried leaves was retrieved.

Kese would, however, not disclose his source of supply.

He was handed over to the police together with the dried substance for further investigation.

The prosecution said the convict denied ownership of the substance in his statement and alleged that he had been framed up by the prison officers.
