Only 86 of 1555 contestants in Western assembly elections are women

Only 86 women are among the 1555 candidates who have filed their nominations in the Western to contest the December 28 district assembly elections.

Mr Steve Opoku-Mensah of the Regional Electoral Commission office, told the GNA at Sekondi that Sefwi Akontombra and Wassa Amenfi East did not have any female candidates adding, complaining, “The situation is very worrying”.

He expressed his disappointment about the general low participation of women in the district assembly process.

“Women need to get interested and be given the support to contribute their quota to national development,” he stressed.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said Pretea/Huni-Valley has the highest female candidates with 10, followed by Tarkwa which has 10.

Mpohor Wassa East has nine, Nzema East Municipality recorded eight, Juaboso seven, Bia, Shama and Sefwi Wiawso all have five female candidates each.

The rest are Wassa Amenfi West-four, Bibiani-Anhwia-Bekwai, Takoradi Sub-Metro, Effia Kwesimintsim and Jomoro, all had three each. Ellembelle, Ahanta West, Sekondi Sub Metro, Essikado-Ketan and Aowin-Suaman also has two each.
