District Assembly Elections-only two women from Cape Coast.

Out of 1,654 candidates contesting the district level election in the Central Region, 120 are women of which only two are from Cape Coast.

Some 4,403 candidates have flied nominations for the Unit Committee Election with 557 being women and 19 of them coming from Cape Coast.

A total of 74 electoral areas have been added to the already existing 498, making it 572 in the region.

The Central Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Samuel Tettey, said this on Tuesday when he briefed District Officers of the EC, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Information Services Department (ISD) at a workshop.

The one-day workshop was to improve participation in the forthcoming district level election on December 28.

Mr. Tettey expressed regret that the enthusiasm and participation of the electorate and the general public toward the election was not as vigorous compared to presidential and parliamentary elections.

The EC Member responsible for the Region, Mrs. Pauline Dadzawa, said media involvement in the election was inadequate and financial support for aspirants was scanty or inadequate.

Mrs. Dadzawa advocated for the involvement of traditional rulers, students and transport unions.
