National Health Insurance to check fraudulent registration of patients

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), on Friday unveiled a policy that will specify the period within which clients of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) could stay in medical facilities without producing their identity cards.

Mr Nicholas Afram of the Claims Department of the NHIA, who announced the new measure, said it would help reduce fraudulent deals related to the NHIS.

Mr Afram was speaking at a claims training workshop for healthcare providers under the NHIS at Koforidua Regional Hospital for staff of the medical facility.

He appealed to healthcare providers to notify the management of the NHIS when they arrest people with fake identity cards of the scheme.

Mr Afram urged healthcare providers to come out with suggestions and memoranda on how best to improve upon the scheme and also engage members of parliament in brainstorming sessions to improve on the National Health Insurance Bill.

Dr Daniel Asare, Medical Director of the hospital, admitted that though the scheme is not perfect, it could be streamlined through regular reviews and discussions.

Dr Christian Tasiame, a radiologist at the hospital, called for regular review of tariffs paid to service providers under the NHIS to ensure that the rates are in line with current market trends.

He explained that service providers purchase consumable items from the open market and therefore if the tariffs are delayed, it would affect the purchasing power of the hospital and its ability to provide quality care.

Dr Tasiame suggested the need for the NHIS to add prostrate cancer to its treatment list.
