Government says has enough money for Single Spine Pay

The government of Ghana says it has enough funds to sustain the country’s new salary system, the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP).

The Daily Graphic issue of Thursday September 9, 2010 reports a deputy Finance Minister Seth Terkpeh as saying that the cost of financing the SSPP had been included in the medium-term framework of the 2011 Budget, while the government explores other sources of revenue to sustain the implementation of the new salaries.

The new salary system, he said is meant to match public sector salaries with the private sector and also correct distortions.

He reportedly told the newspaper that government is about to implement an efficient revenue and expenditure management that would improve the quality of government expenditure and enable some savings to be made to back the SSPP.

Even though all public sector workers were expected to be on the SSPP at its implementation, so far only the Ghana Police are known to be on the new salary system. This has led to anxiety among other public sector workers like teachers, nurses and other civil servants.
