Aspiring Assemblyman arrested for fraud
The Agona Swedru Police on Saturday arrested Mr George Biney Ampiah, an aspiring Assemblyman for Swedru Mahodwe Electoral Area, for allegedly defrauding a Swedru based businessman of GHC 800 under the pretext of offering him a store.
A Police spokesman at the Agona Swedru Divisional Crime Office, said Ampiah, also known as Brebo, approached Mr Kwame Asiamah, businessman some months ago and informed him that he had a store to let out and collected 800 Ghana Cedis of from him after he had expressed interest in the store.
According to the Police spokesman, when Mr Asiamah later asked the suspect to show him the store for him to start furnishing it, Mr Ampiah started ‘playing hide and seek with him’.
The spokesman said about two months ago, Ampiah who is also a lotto seller took the businessman to a certain store at Texaco and the owner of that particular store told Mr Asiamah that the suspect has no store.
According to the Police, Mr Asiamah made several attempts to demand his money back from the suspect, but this proved futile and he reported the matter to the police.
The Police spokesman said the police had to hunt for Ampiah for about two months before he was finally arrested on July 31, this year, upon a tip off.
He said the suspect would be put before the Agona Swedru Circuit Court on Monday August 2, 2010.
