Finance Ministry asked to resource MDAs to buy unit for prepaid meters

Staff of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAS) in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis on Wednesday appealed to the Ministry of Finance to resource all MDAs to enable them buy units for their prepaid meters

The staff, who made the appeal at Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) forum on the installation of pre-paid meters beginning July 22 in the MDAs in the metropolis, said they would find it very difficult to buy the units since they relied on government subvention for the payment of all items.

They said payment was made through the Controller and Accountant General’s office which delayed about three months and by that period the institutions would be without power and this would definitely affect productivity.

Some of the staff also complained at the speed with which GHC10.00 worth of pre-paid units finishes within a week and called on management of the ECG to ensure that all their machines were in good condition to record electricity consumption accurately.

Participants at the forum expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the sensitization which is only a day before the implementation of the installation programme.

Mr Daniel Acquah-Larbie, acting Western Regional Director of the ECG who led the management staff to respond to concerns, said installation of the pre-paid meters was a government policy therefore requested the staff to inform their various head offices to address the issues.

He said following government directives, government hospitals, Fire, Prisons and Immigration Services are exempted from the exercise.
