Maize farmers appeal to government for market

Mr. Samuel Yaw Kudom, Nkoranza South District Chief Farmer, at the weekend appealed to Government to put in place modalities for the purchase of maize from the district, as the crop was in abundance.

Mr. Kudom who made the appeal at a meeting with some maize farmers at Nkoranza, said the crop had no market in the district currently because other crops like yam, cocoyam, dried cassava (Konkonte) were plenty on the market.

He said the farmers were eager to start active work on their farms with the on-set of the rains, since this is the major farming season, but are unable to do so due to financial problems of locked up capitals in the crops.

Mr. Kudom who was adjudged the 2009 Brong Ahafo Regional Best Farmer, said unlike the years when maize dealers frequently visited Nkoranza to buy the product, their number had reduced because of abundant foodstuffs on the national level.

He suggested that the Government could purchase the crop for direct supply to the second cycle institutions as well as first cycle schools in support of the school feeding programme to cut down cost.

Mr. Adjei Boateng, a farmer from Salamkrom in the Nkoranza South District, said the farmers from the area and other catchments communities were “crying for money” to plough their lands for planting, but to no avail.
