Ghana sets up 12-member Committee to plan 2010 World Cup

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has formed a 12-member Planning Committee for Ghana’s participation in this year’s Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Committee will be presided over by Ms Akua Sena Dansua, Minister of Youth and Sports, Reuben Nii Nortey Dua, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Alhaji Abdulai Yakubu, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry.

Ms Dansua who inaugurated the committee said Ghana’s splendid performance in the 2006 World Cup in Germany has set a standard for subsequent appearances hence the need for adequate preparations towards the next competition.

She said members of the committee were selected after painstaking considerations and was of the conviction that they will bring their experience to bear on the planning of the event.

Ms Dansua therefore entreated the members to give off their best by taking their various tasks serious to ensure the successful participation of Ghana in the competition.

Mr Fred Pappoe, Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) gave the assurance that the FA will work hand in hand with the committee to prepare adequately for the World Cup and to be successful.

He said the World Cup has grown beyond the field of football, adding that the committee will see to other aspects of organisation, whilst the FA takes care of the technical aspect of preparations.

The other members includes Worlanyo K. Agrah, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council, (NSC), Oko-Niikoi Dzani representing the business community, Mr Fred Pappoe, Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, (GFA), Mr Stephen Ackah, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture and Jonathan Yakubu of the Office of the National Security Council.

The rest are Mr Kinsley Karimu of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Dina Hammond, Ministry of Tourism, Miss Valerie Sawyer, Office of the President and John Vigah, representing the Sports Writers Association (SWAG) of Ghana.

The Committee is to facilitate the mobilization of funds, arrangement for logistical support, flight arrangements for officials and supporters, accommodation arrangement for officials, consular and other related arrangements for groups going to South Africa and vaccination of members of the groups going to South Africa.
