Ghana National Association of Teachers sets up Teachers' Fund

Members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), have been urged to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Teachers’ fund to improve their living conditions.

Mr Victor Degraft Etison, Kumasi Metropolitan Chairman of GNAT, who made the call, said the aim of the fund was to relieve teachers of their financial problems.

He made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, after briefing a cross section of teachers in the Kumasi Metropolis on the outcome of the golden jubilee conference held in Accra recently.

Mr Etison said among the number of issues discussed and agreed upon at the meeting was the constitution of a technical committee to set up an occupational pension scheme to manage the second tier funds for GNAT members and employees as provided under the new Pension Act.

A youth policy is also being considered to make young teachers play a leading role in the affairs of the association.

Mr Etison said the leadership of the association was doing everything possible to ensure that government paid legitimate entitlements to teachers at all levels.

He appealed to members to take keen interest in the activities of the association to promote their welfare.

I want to know why we teachers have to pay so much interest on our own money when we go for loans from the fund? Our interest rate is far above other financial institutions that we don’t have any share in. Is it true that we are our own enemies?
