Ghanaian charity to raise $1m, send through UN to Haiti

A Ghanaian charity, Caring Kids International says it is raising one million US dollars in sixty days for the people of Haiti which it will send through the United Nations.

The Caring Kids International is raising the money from mostly Ghanaian children and Ghanaians living abroad. According to the founder and Director of the organization, who is also the Dwantuahemaa of Dormaa Ahenkro in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana, Nana Frimpongmaa II, they are asking every Ghanaian child to donate one Ghana cedi to the course. The funds she says will be sent through the UN to help the people of Haiti who have been hit hard by an earthquake.

“We want through this to instill the ‘can do’ spirit in our children. We want them to believe in themselves,” she said. “We should encourage our children to believe that they can also help people in need instead of making them think that they should always expect to be helped.”

The fund raising project was launched Wednesday January 20, 2009.
