Unemployed jailed 20 years for possessing Indian Hemp

A Takoradi Circuit Court “A” on Friday sentenced Mohammed Yakubu 18, unemployed to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour for possessing narcotic drugs without authority.

He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Kumah Mensah, said at about 0300 hours on June 18 last year, the accused jumped over a wall to steal at a house at Tanokrom near Takoradi.

He said some people saw the accused and raised alarm but he took to his heels and was arrested after a hot chase and handed over to the police.

Prosecution said during a search, the police found two wrappers of some dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on the accused and after investigations charged him with the offence.

Passing sentence, the presiding judge Mr Kwesi Boakye, said the accused was a hardened criminal who did not show any remorse during the trial.

He said the use of narcotic drugs was on the increase in Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and efforts should be made to stem the tide.

Mr Boakye said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to drug addicts who often terrorise the public.
