The top US envoy for Africa has warned that Zimbabwe could face the same fate as Guinea when Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe dies.
Guinea has been in political turmoil since its longtime dictator died nearly a week ago. A military-led group declared a coup hours later and named an interim leader.
Jendayi Frazer, the US assistant secretary of state for African affairs said on Sunday that if the 84-year-old Mugabe dies while still in power, the same fate awaits Zimbabwe.
Frazer has been a vocal critic of Mugabe, who has been in power since the country’s 1980 independence.
Earlier this month, she said the US could no longer support a proposed power-sharing deal that would leave Mugabe as president.
