E.P. Church requests return of property

The Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P.) Church, Ghana, has appealed to government to help retrieve its land at Cantonments, Accra for the construction of a “multi-purpose headquarters complex”.

Right Reverend Francis Amenu, Moderator of the Church made the request at the 5th General Assembly of the church in Ho, under the theme, “God of life, lead us to justice and peace and dignity for growth and development”.

Right Reverend Amenu said the church needed the headquarters in Accra to be able to engage “more effectively and efficiently in ecumenical engagements nationally and internationally” and collaborate daily with other major religious, civil and government institutions in Accra.

He headquarters of the E.P. Church has been in Ho, the Volta Regional capital since its establishment in 1847.

The church also requested government to return its Hospitals at Adidome and Worawora to it.

“The current state of both the Adidome and Worawora Hospitals is a far cry from what they used to be when the E.P. Church was managing the two institutions, built by the church since early 1950’s”, Right Reverend Amenu said.

He also asked the government’s assistance to establish three Colleges of Education and a Secondary-Technical School in the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo, Volta and Northern Regions respectively.

Right Reverend Amenu appealed to government to reconsider its policy to tax private Universities since some of them, such as the E.P. University College, “are now at the developmental stage of crawling”.

He commended government for fulfilling its promise to give a Benz bus to the University College and drew attention to another promise to add a 4-wheel pick-up.

Responding, Mr. Francis Ganyaglo, Deputy Volta Regional Minister said the requests would be conveyed to government.

On the taxing of Universities, Mr. Ganyaglo said “taxes are paid on profits”.

He said the EPUC should aim at becoming a financially viable institution.

Mr. Ganyaglo presented GH¢10,000 from President John Mahama, who was expected to address the opening session of the General Assembly.
