Gunmen rob and rape Tamale-Tatale bound Metro bus passengers
Four Armed Robbers suspected to be Fulanis on Saturday night attacked Metro Mass Transit LTD bus with registration number AS998Z travelling from Tamale to Tatale in the Northern Region.
The driver, Afa Mohammed Seidu received multiple gunshots on the jaw and neck, while the phones and other valuables of the 60 passengers were taken away.
Some of the women were also raped at gunpoint.
Narrating his ordeal to the Ghana News Agency at the Yendi government hospital, Afa Seidu the driver said he suspected Fulani Armed Robbers to be behind the attack.
He said they blocked the road with heavy logs and when he attempted driving over the logs, they fired at his jaw, which compelled him to stop as he was bleeding profusely.
He said immediately he stopped, they ordered all the passengers to get down and lay down, which they did, and one of them had a rifle and started giving warning shots, while the other three were handling cutlasses.
He said they then collected their mobile phones and money.
Both the driver and the 21-one-year-old girl that was raped are on admission and receiving medical attention at the Yendi Hospital.
When the Yendi Divisional Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) office was contacted, Sergeant Issifu Jakale, the in-charge of the case said when they heard of the incident, they went to the scene and saw how the armed robbers used rocks and logs to block the road.
He said it was the fourth time armed robbers had attached passengers on that stretch of road and called on the management of the Metro Mass Transit LTD to desist from travelling in the night in the area, without police escorts.
He said the lives of the passengers were at risk without police escort.
He said investigations were on-going.
Meanwhile, Mr Wilfred Npong, a victim of the robbery blamed the situation on the Management of Metro Bus Limited.
He said although, they were supposed to take off from Yendi at 1330 hours, the bus delayed and finally started the journey at 2030 hours.
He appealed to government to tar the Yendi-Tatale road to avoid the perennial attacks, as the robbers operated best on the rough roads.
