Ghana opens €1m Spanish-funded cold store
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture on Tuesday opened a cold store valued at one million Euros at Prampram in the Ningo-Prampram District.
The Spanish funded facility has two refrigerated anterooms, one freezing tunnel, one flake ice factory, one ice bin, a standby generator, office and a water reservoir.
The facility, which is the first to be officially opened, is among six cold stores being built by the Ministry with funding by Spanish FAD.
The others are located at Nyanyano and Kronmantse in the Central Region, Shama, Half Assini and New Takoradi, all in the Western Region.
Mr Aquinas Quansah, the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said the facility would help solve post harvest loses fishermen suffer in the Ningo-Prampram District.
He urged the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly to collaborate with private cold-store operators to man the facility to ensure its efficiency and effectiveness.
Mr Quansah said having a Public/ Private Partnership for such a facility would help in its management and maintenance.
He called on individuals and private organizations interested in managing such a facility to put in their proposals and appealed to the people to utilize the facility to its full capacity.
Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, Member of Parliament for the Ningo-Prampram, reiterated the usefulness of the facility for the fishing communities.
