Ukraine offers Northern Ghana students opportunity to study medicine

stethoscopeThe Ukraine International Education Council is offering scholarships to students of the three northern regions to study medicine and other health related courses in selected Ukraine universities.

This was made known at separate seminars organised at Bawku and Bolgatanga under the theme “The Study of Medicine and Health Sciences: Opportunities, Challenges and Threats in Developing Countries”

A key note address delivered by the Bawku and Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executives, Mr Abdullai Musah and Mr Edwarad Ayagle respectively, on behalf of the Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, lauded the Ukraine International Education Council, EduGha Organization and the Advance Global College of Health Sciences for the initiative.

He said one of the major challenges confronting the three northern regions was the shortage of doctors and said this had even worsened the doctor–patient ratio and expressed optimism that the training programme would help address the problem.

He indicated that the three northern regions suffered most in terms of access to studying medicine since the area had only one institution which was the university for Development Studies without the capacity to absorb the numerous applicants that apply to study there.

“This has limited most students to studying other courses which originally was not their area of interest.  Government has not relented in its efforts to ensure equitable development of all parts of the country, especially the health sector, hence its partnership with Ukraine which has the state of the art facilities to train students in medicine and other health related sciences”

He entreated the students to take advantage of the opportunity to enable them to contribute towards developing the nation.

Mr Zaruk Nuhu, Principal and Managing Director of  Advance Global College School of Health Services,  said his institution was in partnership with the Ukraine International Education Council and  indicated that the Council’s main duty was to admit students across the globe to feed the over 170 universities in the Ukraine.

He disclosed that the scholarships were in two types; the full scholarship and half scholarship and said scholarships awarded depended on the status of the candidates, adding “a good atmosphere is provided for students to study in the universities whilst working to foot the remaining fees.”

Mr Alhassan Mahadi , Chief Executive Officer of  EduGha Organization said discussions were ongoing with the partners to  explore possibilities to establish  medical and health university in Northern Ghana  in the near future, stressing that “the Universities in Ukraine were accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the instruction for teaching there was English”

The Seminar was organised by EduGha Organization, a charitable non-governmental organization, committed to sustainable eradication of illiteracy among the underprivileged, deprived and marginalized communities in hidden corners of the globe, the Ukrainian International Education Council and the Advance Global College of Health Sciences in Accra.

The forum aimed at serving participants with varied, practical, relevant and up-to-date information on education, career and job guidance to help the youth, parents and professionals make well informed decision for their future endeavours.

Among the team included Professor Zaika Serhii, Vice Chancellor of National Pirogov Medical University, Ukraine, and Professor Turch Vasyl, Dean of the National University of Water Management, also of Ukraine.
