Industrial workers kick against general tax hikes in Ghana

Oil_mine workersThe Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) of the Trades Union Congress, has criticized Government’s taxation increase, saying it signals insensitivity to the economic difficulties the ordinary people in the country are facing.

It said in as much as it appreciated the need to mobilize revenue, burdening the people with more taxes was not the way.

The workers expressed the resentment during the Ashanti Regional Council meeting held in Kumasi to discuss how to raise productivity at the workplace.

Mr Morgan Ayawine, the Deputy General Secretary of the ICU, said the Union found it unjustifiable for Ghanaians, especially the poor worker to continue to be saddled with high taxes.

He said that was awful in a situation where some employers were using “the power outrages as yardstick to negotiate or offer low salaries to workers”.

He said he was satisfied with the prevailing industrial peace in the region and asked that that was sustained.

He urged the members to ensure good work ethics and cut down on waste to boost production.

The Deputy General Secretary rallied the workers to support and cooperate with the leadership to make the Union more vibrant.

Mr Kojo Intsiful, the Regional Chairman, appealed to them to work hard and avoid all negative practices.
