Ghana beats Sudan in World Cup qualifier

Ghana’s Black Stars squeezed  four unanswered goals past Sudan in a crucial 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The win puts the Stars in a good position to making a third successive World Cup appearance at the event billed for Brazil next year.  Ghana took advantage of a sloppy marking at the right flank, broke the deadlock the 19th minute through Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan, had the easiest of tasks to tap in John Boye’s header after the defender intercepted a Mubarak Wakaso free-kick.

The Stars increased the tally 37th minute courtesy Wakaso whose 30-yarder shot zoomed straight into the net to beat Sudanese goalkeeper, Elmois Mahgoub, after he received a long pass from Harrison Afful.

The visitors came into the picture after conceding the goals with some sublime inter-positional exchanges, but, lack of precision upfront denied them from getting the needed goals.

The Sudanese came into the second half a transformed side and began to initiate most of their attacks from the right flank where inexperienced Kissi Boateng appeared helpless in his attempt to stop the more slippery attackers.

The visitors squandered clear-cut chances in the 47th and 50th minutes with Mohammed Tahir and Ramadan Agab missing the targets narrowly.

Sensing danger, the Stars brought on Solomon Asante for skipper Sulley Muntari, while Agyemang Badu replaced Asamoah Gyan with Emmanuel Yaw Frimpong substituting Rabiu Mohammed.

Ghana, buoyed by these changes, became sharper upfront and probed for the needed goals which did come in the 79th minute through Abdul Majeed Warris.

As the game wore on, substitute Agyemang Badu outpaced his marker to connect home a Warris well-taken pass in a counter-attack.
