Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory in the December 7, 2012 presidential polls.

According to Goodluck Jonathan, President Mahama’s election is an endorsement of his leadership qualities.

“President Jonathan welcomes President Mahama’s success in securing his people’s mandate for a full term in office, following his assumption of Presidential powers…as an endorsement by the Ghanaian electorate of his leadership and his party’s action plan for further socio-economic development and continued consolidation of democracy in the country,” said a statement signed by his Special Advisor on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati.

The statement continues, “The President on behalf of himself, the Government and people of Nigeria salutes the people of Ghana for the successful conduct of the polls.”

President Jonathan therefore urged Mr Mahama to cooperate with the opposition parties to develop Ghana.

The statement indicated that President Jonathan looks forward to “continuing to work and collaborate with President Mahama and his administration at bilateral and multilateral levels on issues of common interest to Nigeria and Ghana.”

President Mahama was declared winner of Ghana’s 2012 presidential polls after beating his closest opponent Nana Akufo-Addo.
