Ghana has been working at development since becoming independent in 1957. Different development paradigms have been tried and tested – some have failed, others have worked and there are still works in progress to develop the country.

While development efforts are still ongoing, there are debates about which way to go. The IMANI Centre for Policy and Education with support from the World Bank Ghana, Knowledge Space will be organising a debate on the topic “Subsidies are required now for Ghana’s development.”

Speaking against the motion is Harvard trained Expert on International Development Law. Internationally recognized instructor in the fine points of jurisprudence, torts, and the law of the environment, Ernest Abotsi. And to speak for the motion is Nana Asante Bediatuo, a Guest Lecturer at prestigious legal training institutions in the United States. He is also a former Wall Street legal luminary, and Advisor to international banks and multinational conglomerates.

Nana Bediatuo is also an Advocate for international clients at the International Court of Justice in Hague, and a regular Consultant to nation-states pressing their claims in Geneva.

The series of debates will begin with the first one on Friday November 13, 2009 at the British Council Hall. The time is 10:30am.

The moderator is Papa Kow Acquaye – Barrister of the Supreme Court of Ghana, and Head of Research at the Joy FM radio station.
