Internet makes business location unnecessary
Good location is no longer necessary to ensure the success of a business as this factor can be addressed with the advances of the Internet, said Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
“A good location needs higher entry capital because the rental price for such property is expensive, thus it is not suitable for those without such capital,” he said at the simultaneous opening of two conferences organised by Universiti Industri Selangor (UNISEL) beginning here on Thursday.
The events are 1st Malaysia-Indonesia Private University Industry Linkages Conference (UIBL 20098) and 2nd World Conference of International Entrepreneur and Family Business (IEFBA 2009).
Abdul Khalid said that entrepreneurs always wanted to be given good shop locations so that they would be able to compete effectively in a tough business environment.
However, he said, by using the Internet, they could market their products, take orders and deliver their merchandise right to the doorsteps of customers.
“You don’t need the ground shophouse but you need a very effective warehouse and networking Internet communication,” he added.
According to Abdul Khalid, the state is supportive of the private sector because they are partners to the government and Selangor wanted them to be profitable.
He said when companies operating in Selangor are profitable, they will expand their businesses which translated into an expansion of the state economy as well.
“To be profitable means you have to work and earn it. The lesson you need to know is that there is no such thing as a free lunch,” he added.
The two conferences, which will end tomorrow, are attended by 140 participants from 14 countries, namely Indonesia, Australia, China, Finland, India, Papua New Guinea, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Singapore, the Philippines, South Africa, Japan, Ghana and Malaysia.
