The Nigerian banks doing business in Ghana are said to be among the top five banks in Nigeria.
Dr. Paul Acquah, out-going governor of the Bank of Ghana who was answering questions from journalists, Wednesday at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference, said the central bank does due diligence in granting licenses to these Nigerian banks which he said, “we refer to as foreign banks in Ghana.”
A journalist had asked if Ghana has the market for the large influx of foreign banks into the country.
He said all the Nigerian banks in the country have branches in Europe and other parts of Africa. He added that “if these banks are able to distinguish themselves in the UK, then they are qualified to operate in Ghana as well.”
He also cited the Bank of Baruda, which is also a credible bank with international branches.
The Nigerian banks doing business in Ghana are UBA, GT Bank, Amalbank, Zenith Bank and the latest to join is Access Bank.
During the 2008 Banking Awards, Zenith Bank emerged the Bank of the Year. Amalbank and UBA won awards in other categories.
