International Symposium on communication and development takes place in Accra
A two-day International Symposium on Communication, New Media and Development in Africa is ongoing at the African University College of Communications (AUCC) in Accra.
The symposium which runs from Thursday June 4 to Friday June 5, 2009 is under the theme “Assessing the contribution of communication and new media to human development in Africa” has assembled some of the dedicated communications and media experts on the continent and from the US as speakers.
Among the speakers are Prof. Alfed Opubor of the West African News Media and Development in Benin, George White of the UCLA Centre for Communications and Community, Dr. Osei Darkwa of the Ghana Telecom University College and Prof. Absalom Mutere of AUCC.
The discussions looked at the role of communication, new media and their capability to engender development in Africa.
The need to re-evaluate the concepts of new media within African culture was suggested as well as policy change in as some of the ways to bring about a better understanding of the relevance of new media, particularly, ICT to the continent’s development needs with specific emphasis on achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The symposium is sponsored by the World Bank Group, UNESCO, Comsys Gh. Ltd., PenPlusbytes, and the Ghana Telecom University College.
In attendance are media practitioners, ICT professionals, civil servnts, students and scholars.
