AngloGold Ashanti loses two miners in fatal accidents in two days
Two miners working for AngloGold Ashanti have died in fatal accidents in the company’s mines in South Africa.
The accidents occurred in two successive days – May 21 and 22 2009, press releases from AngloGold Ashanti copied to ghanabusinessnews.com have said.
The accident of May 21, claimed the life of Leeto Mlenza, a night shift cleaner at AngloGold Ashanti’s Tau Lekoa mine. According to the release, Mr. Mlenza wa fatally injured early in the morning when two locomotives collided at a cross cut 1350m below surface. The Tau Lekoa mine is located near Orkney in South Africa’s North West Province.
Another miner, whose name was given as Mr. Ramakhaola died Friday May 22 at AngloGold Ashanti’s Moab Khotsong mine in the Free State, South Africa.
The release said Mr. Ramakhaola was fatally injured whilst carrying out his duties at a working face some 2, 277m below surface.
The releases indicated that, no other employees were injured in both accidents.
