DFID supports Girl-Child education in Kwabre District

The British Department for International Development (DFID) has donated school materials valued GH¢1,000 to 150 girls in some selected basic schools in the Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region.

The items, which included school uniforms, pairs of sandals, exercise books, pens and pencils, were presented to the schools early this year.

The beneficiary schools were Amanpe D/A, Waamase D/A, Abrem D/A Primary schools, Besore D/A Junior High School (JHS) and Adwuman Manhyia D/A Junior High School (JHS).

Ms Regiina Adusei, Kwabre District Girl-Child Education Coordinator, who told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Mamponteng on Tuesday, said the gesture was to support the development of Girl-Child Education.

She said her outfit had embarked on campaigns aimed at sensitising adults and children especially the girl-child in the District on the need to the importance of education.

Ms Adusei announced that her outfit had also established Girl-Child Education Clubs in all the basic and second cycle schools to enlighten pupils and students on sex education and career counselling.

The District Coordinator also said the District Education Office, had been organising training courses periodically for Girl-Child Facilitators to help minimise school drop-outs especially among girls and also protect them from violent treatments.

Ms Adusei was not happy about the way and manner some parents and guardians neglected their wards especially the girl-child and asked them to provide their basic needs at all times to enhance teaching and learning in schools.

She advised stakeholders including the Kwabre District Assembly, Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), Churches and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to support the education of the girl-child to enable them contribute meaningfully towards socio-economic development of the country in future.
